Main Character Syndrome: Summer Beach Edition

A case study on how to fumble two brothers, a plot, and my last nerve.

Okay, I had to write this one, The Summer I Turned Pretty’s season 3 episode 1 just came out. I would prolly write this after all the episodes come out, BUT NO BECAUSE I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY BEFORE I EXPLODE.

WHY IS BELLY LIKE THAT??? LIKE ACTUALLY JUST WHY. she plays both brothers the ENTIRE time, says she’s “confused” every 5 minutes, and then acts SHOCKED when the whole thing blows up in her face. GIRL. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

She flirts with Conrad like he’s the love of her life and then the MOMENT he becomes emotionally distant (you know, WHILE HIS MOM IS LITERALLY DYING), she runs crying into Jeremiah’s arms like she didn’t cause half the chaos herself. And the way Belly suddenly shifts to him like “he’s always been there for me” as if Conrad wasn’t literally holding his family together while silently falling apart?? Girl, pick up a little emotional awareness.

and THEN she goes BACK to Conrad the second Jeremiah becomes emotionally available?? nah. this isn’t a love triangle. this is just emotional whiplash with a beach aesthetic.

ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW USELESS BELLY IS??? she doesn’t do anything. just exists. causes chaos. kisses both brothers. cries. then repeats. SHE NEVER TAKES ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ANYTHING. like girl you blew up a whole family and then stood there like 😐.

and I’m SORRY but Jeremiah is so MID. fun? yes. flirty? sure. but ZERO depth. zero. (Don’t come after me pls, I’m proudly team Conrad) I’m Sorry Conrad was one of the only realistic characters. Like I don’t think anyone would expect their boyfriend to be a prince to you when their mom is dying of cancer.

honestly the show should’ve been named- ThE SuMmEr I dEcIdEd To RuIn a FaMiLy.

long story short: belly should’ve stayed single. Conrad deserves peace. Jeremiah needs to grow up. and I need therapy for watching all of it.
